The students in the 2nd grade are learning about their environment. We are discussing different kinds of environments and looking at clean and dirty environments. The students have also learned about the 3 R’s: Reduce, Reuse, Recycle. The students looked at different pieces of “trash” and decided if it could be reduced, reused, or recycled. Their ideas were quite thoughtful. I hope they use this knowledge to help reduce their environmental impact and keep their communities clean.
The 3rd graders started their “Build a City Project” last week. Working groups, the students have to create a coastal or inland city.
They have to decide the pros and cons of each and decide where is the better place to build a city; by the coast or inland. The students created blueprints before building their cities. They needed to decide what a city needs to be a good city. So far, the group’s are showing good cooperation and creativity. I think there might be some future architects and mayors in this classroom.
In grade 4 social studies class, we have started watching a movie called, Wawa no Cidal. The movie is about a family of Amis living in Hualien and their connection with their homeland, identity, and many other issues. I am showing them this movie because we have talked about many of the issues from the movie. I would like the students to learn more about other groups of people and have more empathy about others.
The 5th graders started their “Create Your Own Country Project” last week. The students have been tasked with creating their own country. In groups, the students have to decide the borders of each country and decide if they will share the natural resources or build fences between their countries. Each student must make their own country and decide what countries to work with. Many groups have surprised me with their complete cooperation with other countries (students) in their group. This project is a lot of fun to watch as the students decide how to create a country of their own.
In grade 6 class, we finished watching the Wawa no Cidal. In the upcoming week, we will wrap about lesson about other countries and go back to focus on Taiwan again. We will talk about the issues surrounding Taiwan like the one that were brought up during the movie.
